Sledding in Wallberg, on Germany’s Longest Toboggan Run

The Wallberg Rodelbahn is the longest winter sled run in Germany.

It’s located in Wallberg which is a mountain in the Bavarian Alps in the southern part of Bavaria, 60 km from Munich.

Sledding in Wallberg is mindblowing and it’s one of the best day trips from Munich.

Route: Munich to Wallbergbahn, Rottach-Egern (1 h 33 mins)

Departure: Start early at 8:00 from Munich Central Station to get the best out of your day. Don’t leave Munich later. Otherwise, when you get there you will not get a rental sled and you might have to wait as long as 2 hours to get one.

We took the train for Tegernsee and changed for Bus 9556 (direction: Klamm, Kreuth) in Tegernsee for Wallbergbahn, Rottach-Egern.
When we were there in Wallberg before 10:00, things went smoothly. Once you get there, look for the building of the Wallbergbahn right away.

MY IMPRESSIONS AS A FIRST-TIMER SLEDDING ON THE WALLBERG TOBOGGAN RUN

For me, it was an adrenaline ride for the first time sledding in Wallberg.

The Wallberg sled run (Rodelbahn in German) is a lot of fun and pretty crazy. Some parts of the trail are really steep and has very sharp curves.

While enjoying your ride, make sure you are in full control of your sled and you pay attention to others around you. Some experienced sledders are flying way too fast and the inexperienced sledders don’t react very well when they all of a sudden start to slide too fast when the curves are approaching.

The most interesting situation is when people stand in the middle of the sled run and you shout to them to get out of the way while flying towards them and they get so confused that they have no idea whether they should move to the right or the left.

In this case, you need to be careful about how to direct your sled in order to avoid colliding with someone. Nevertheless, sledding in Wallberg is fun, but by all means, you need to be there with your mind as well so that you can react appropriately to the actions of others on the sled run.

MY IMPRESSIONS WHEN SLEDDING FOR THE SECOND TIME ON THE WALLBERG TOBOGGAN RUN

The second time was totally different. The sledders on the sled were not so insanely fast as the last time. Also, I got much better with sledding. So, I didn’t feel that it was as scary as the first time.

Sled rental when tobogganing is only open daily from 8:45 am. – 3:30 pm.

Find the Rodelverleih (sled rental in German) where you get your sled. We didn’t have to queue up as we arrived early and the first thing we did was quickly hire the sled. However, people, who got there just after us, had to line up for quite a while to rent the sled. So by being quick, you save time.

One time, however; we left Munich around 9:00 and we reached the sled rental shop at 11:00. The sleds were all taken by that time.

Some of us had to wait nearly 2 hours to get a sled.

Take care of your sled! Sleds can disappear. Each time we went sledding, someone’s sled was taken away. I don’t know whether people are stealing sleds or just accidentally taking the wrong one as they all look the same. Remember that each sled has a number. Take a photo of that to remember which sled was yours.

Ascending with the cable car when it’s foggy

You can ascend to the top of the sled run with a cable car the Wallbergbahn. It doesn’t matter whether you take the lift down or up, with or without the sled, you still have to pay for it.

If you don’t feel like paying and you are fit, walking up is always an option. I walked up once on the hiking trail and once on the ski slope. Walking up takes at least 2 h 30 mins and the view is gorgeous on the way up.
