Höllentalklamm Gorge is one of the most beautiful natural monuments in Germany and one of the best day trips from the Bavarian capital, Munich.

It’s not only beautiful to be inside the Höllentalklamm Gorge but there are beautiful hiking routes leading to it and even more, stunning hiking routes are starting from the gorge.

Höllentalklamm means Hell’s Valley George in German. Hölle means hell, Tal means valley and Klamm means gorge.

Höllentalklamm is a beautiful gorge that features stunning canyons with a beautiful stream, stunning waterfalls and huge rocks.

A well-indicated hiking path makes it possible to experience this extraordinary natural wonder.

In the map below, you can see the route including the trains station, the most suitable parking lot in Hammersbach and the hiking route from Hammersbach to Höllentalangerhütte through Höllentalklamm Gorge.

2.1. FROM MUNICH TO HAMMERSBACH BY TRAIN

Recommended departure time from Munich: 8 am

Route: First, you take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, change for the Zugspitzebahn in Garmish and get off in Hammersbach.

Ticket needed: Bayern-Ticket (If you don’t know the Bayern-Ticket, read about it, here.)

Insider Tip: Make sure you check when the last train is going back to Munich not to miss the last train going back.

2.2. FROM MUNICH TO HAMMERSBACH BY CAR AND PARKING

If you travel to Höllentalklamm by car from Munich, you have to drive in the direction of Grainau.

Simply enter the address of the parking lot close to Höllentalklamm to get there easily: Wanderparkplatz P2

WHERE TO PARK IN HAMMERSBACH

The parking lot is indicated as Wanderparkplatz P2 (Hammersbach in Grainau) on Google Maps.

You can park your car there and start your epic hike. From this parking lot, it takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to reach Höllentalklamm.

PARKING COSTS IN HAMMERSBACH

Parking costs 5 Euros for half a day and 8 Euros for the entire day.

CAR RENTAL

If you don’t have your own car, you might want to rent a car through Auto Europe.

On Google Maps, you can just enter Höllentalklamm to find the route.

WHERE TO HAVE LUNCH ON THE WAY

There is a café at the entrance of Höllentalklamm where you can have lunch. They take only cash.

The Höllentalklamm Gorge is only accessible when there is no snow. Thus, unlike Partnachklamm, it’s closed in the winter season.

Generally, Höllentalklamm closes around the end of October and opens in May. When they exactly open really depends on the weather and snow conditions.

Then, between May and October, Höllentalklamm is open 24/7 every day.

If you enter Höllentalklamm before it opens, you can pay for the ticket when you leave.

INSIDER TIP: Being a DAV (Alpine Club) is really worth it if you live close to the Alps for many reasons. I joined the German Alpine Club when I first tried Via Ferrata in Germany and since then I enjoy a lot of its benefits such as reduced prices for tickets and alpine huts as in the Olpererhütte in Zillertal, Austria.

You can walk for about another hour to get to the end of the stream there. It’s a medium-difficult hike with beautiful waterfalls on the way.

You can also have lunch or dinner in this alpine hut.

• Best and most suitable hiking boots. I highly recommend the brand Mammut. That’s what I’m also wearing.
• Hiking backpack: Try not to pack much but you really need a backpack for climbing.
• Hiking socks
• Comfortable leggings and shirt

7.2. PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR

• iPhone It’s the best camera for taking quick photos and recording videos quickly while hiking.
• Mobile phone chain: This is very practical if you want to take photos while climbing or hiking. I’m always wearing it. This way I can quickly take photos and I will never drop or lose it while hiking or traveling.
• GoPro Hero 7: It’s the best camera for adventure photography.
• Power bank: If you want to take a lot of photos and make videos, a power bank is essential to keep your phone constantly charged.

7.3. WHAT ELSE SHOULD BE IN YOUR BACKPACK

• Rain-jacket: It will prevent you from getting wet inside the gorge.
• Sun protection cream: In summer, in the mountains, the sun is very strong, and regardless of what type of skin type you have, you need to protect your skin from the strong traditions of the sun.
• Sunglasses
• First aid kit:  A first aid kit should always be in your pack for hiking just in case.
• Snacks such as energy bars, fruits, sandwiches
• Water: Bring at least 2 L of water in summer with you.

This is an awesome hike that I am planning to do very soon.

There are 6 ways to hike the highest mountain of Germany, Zugspitze. One of them is the hiking route through the Höllentalklamm George. Just like the Reintal route, you can also do this either in one day or in two days.

I highly recommend this hike in two days so that you can enjoy the magnificent landscapes in a relaxed manner. I prepared an awesome plan that you can use to plan the same trip for yourself.

DAY 1 – HIKING ZUGSPITZE THROUGH HÖLLENTALKLAMM

The first day was relaxing and we hiked up to Höllentalangerhütte alpine hut while enjoying the beauties of nature.

After this stunning hike, the best is to have a tasty alpine lunch in the Höllentalangerhütte and have a beautiful rest while admiring the mountains around you.

DAY 2 – HIKING ZUGSPITZE THROUGH HÖLLENTALKLAMM

Start in the morning: 7:30

Difficulty Level: T5 including C Level Via Ferrata
Hike Distance Day 1: ~ 5 km (3.1 mi)
Hike Duration Day 1: ~ 6 – 7 hours
Start altitude: Höllentallangerhütte at 1,381 m (4,530 ft)
Max altitude: Zugspitze at 2,962 m (9,718 ft)

On the top of Zugspitze, go for a delicious Bavarian meal and enjoy the panoramic view.

Come down with the Zugspitze Cable Car and enjoy the magnificent vista over the Alps. The most mind-blowing part of this journey is when Eibsee Lake is visible.

WHAT TO BRING – HIKING ZUGSPITZE THROUGH HÖLLENTALKLAMM IN 2 DAYS

Other than what I specified in the what to bring and what to wear for a day trip in the Höllentalklamm section, you also need a couple of more things for this hike.

• Compact sleeping bag: If you want to stay in the hütte, you must bring your own sleeping case.

• Harness: This is the link between you and the ropes.
• Via Ferrata Set: This will keep you from falling.
• Helmet: This will protect your head from falls and rockfalls.
• Gloves: To protect your hands while using the ropes.

I bought them separately. But you can actually buy everything in one package, like this Edelrid climbing set.

The brands that I use are really good brands and it was worth paying for them. I can say that I made a really good investment with the products I purchased for Via Ferrata climbing.

There are many excellent places close to the Höllentalklamm such as Zugspitze, Partnachklamm Gorge, and Eibsee Lake, and a lot of cool things to do such as walking with alpacas and climbing in an adventure park. You can easily spend one week there and take fantastic day trips from Garmish.
